Wine Cellar Specialists are the Winners of the 2012 Dallas Builders Association ARC Award

Wine Cellar Specialists, Master Wine Cellar Builders in Dallas, Texas, have won a much coveted 2012 Dallas Builders Association ARC Award for taking a small, unused kitchen pantry under some stairs, and turning it into a full, climate controlled, custom wine cellar.

(1888PressRelease) This prestigious award was no easy win for Wine Cellar Specialists as they were competing against 219 other entries. However, the custom wine cellar they created for the Dann family in their home in Frisco, Dallas, is award winning indeed.

One of the amazing things to note about this wine cellar is its size. The Dann's didn't have room for your average wine cellar that is usually located in a basement; instead they opted to transform a closet into what turned out to be a spectacular use of a very small space.

Nancy Noga, the owner of Wine Cellar Specialists took on this project herself. Starting with what was an unused kitchen pantry under the stairs, Nancy started by creating a free 3D design for the Dann's outlining what the wine cellar would eventually look like, including all the wine racks. This tiny closet was designed to store 496 bottles but upon completion the Dann's surprised everyone as they were actually able to store 514 bottles.

To begin this project all the drywall had to be removed in order to install the insulation and the vapor barrier which is topped off with green board interior walls. All this was required as this wine cellar was being built in Texas, which, in the summer, can get very hot; hence the need for a climate controlled wine cellar.

Now comes the fun part: the addition of the wine racks. The first wine rack is what is called a 'waterfall wine rack' as this was under the stairs and therefore presented the challenge of a sloping ceiling. Also designed in the room were diamond X bin wine racks, these allow for storage of multiple bottles on their side and are usually used to store bottles that are from the same vineyard for example.

These wine racks have a great deep patina as they were built in mahogany which has wonderful colors in its own right and to help bring those colors out the Dann's had the racks lacquered.

One wall only allowed for a six inch deep rack as it was actually behind the door when it was open. Above this rack was the biggest design challenge: the cooling unit. As the drain pipes for the cooling unit could not be routed straight down to a drain, as is usually done, a condensation pump had to be added under the cooling unit itself, which was a US Cellar Systems RM 2600 split system.

No one wants to see a big ugly cooling unit especially in a custom wine cellar so Wine Cellar Specialists designed a unique box and grille made of the same wood as the racks to hide the unit. Ingenious!

They were also lucky enough to have one of the smaller racks installed with a 'design row'. This row of bottles is unique in that the labels of the bottles of wine are on prominent display. A good way to show off all those vintages! Of course that needs lighting and it appears Wine Cellar Specialists were very clever in their use of lighting. LED spot lights were installed which allowed the lights to be moved if necessary to see every corner of this charming cellar without creating heat which would be detrimental to the wine.

Tuscan square top door, with arched dual pane glass and a wrought iron inset, was stained the same color as the exiting cabinets within the home which really added to that 'custom' look. These doors come with an automatic door bottom which is another feature that makes Wine Cellar Specialists so good, this door bottom rises up into the door when you open it which means there is nothing to drag across that wonderful floor and scratch it.
