Once upon a time, activist investors like Carl Icahn would acquire a sizable stake in a company, something in the 10% range, and push for changes up to and including a sale of the business. Icahn, and others like Bill Ackman and Nelson Peltz, are still conducting business the same way, but private equity firms are taking a page out of the activist investor handbook as well.
