On a recent visit to Tokyo, passing by the Japanese capital’s legendary Shibuya crossing did not feel different in anyway. When traffic lights go red at the busy junction, they do so at the same instant in every direction. Then in a moment of organized chaos, pedestrians pour in from all directions, moving not just in a linear pattern across zebra crossings, but diagonally too.
