It happened on an autumn morning in 1979. When it happened, I was a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was in pilot training at a now-decommissioned base in Arizona. Late autumn mornings in the desert can be exceptionally crisp. This morning was no different. I was at a remote field for ejection seat and parachute training. Those in my class were immersed in the visceral experience. None of us knew – indeed, no one but a few hundred people knew – exactly what events were unfolding. |
