In 1984, a television ad for the Wendy’s chain became a cultural phenomenon when a plain-spoken woman examined the hamburger she had just been served and demanded to know, “Where’s the beef?” Since that time, “Where’s the beef?” has become a catchphrase for questioning the substance of a wide range of products and ideas. While we could debate the health merits of a big beefy hamburger relative to other menu choices, hamburgers with lots of beef certainly provide more calories and protein to fuel physical activity than buns alone can supply.
