The size of the August quarter miss is obviously hard for the human mind to comprehend. BlackBerry effectively missed its August quarter smartphone shipment volume by roughly 50% even after Wall Street had brought down its estimates repeatedly over the summer. Shipping only 3.7 M units during the quarter, the company also stated that most of these devices were not BB10 models. This means that the number of BlackBerry phones using the new operating system was 1.8 M or less. What makes this so dreadful is that BlackBerry had three different BB10 devices shipping during the quarter, one of them the brand new Q5. Consumer rejection of these models has been so absolute that each of them shipped only hundreds of thousands of units over the summer - even though BlackBerry's global user base must have still topped 50 M at the midpoint of the quarter.
