(1888PressRelease) OTTAWA, ON - NorthStar Utilities Solutions is pleased to announce that the City of Naperville, Ill., has chosen MeterSense as its meter data management solution.

Located approximately 30 miles west of Chicago in DuPage and Will counties, Naperville is home to approximately 145,000 people. Although the city's history is firmly rooted in agricultural traditions, Naperville today is a key destination along the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. Nalco, Tellabs, OfficeMax, Alcatel-Lucent, ConAgra and Nicor Gas are among the city's largest employers.

Through the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative (NSGI), the city is implementing sophisticated new technology that will empower its utility customers with tools and options to monitor and reduce their energy use, if they choose. By 2012, the utility will replace more than 57,000 electric meters with smart meters and install and upgrade infrastructure to ensure a consistent and reliable two-way flow of information between the electric utility and its customers. The NSGI also lays the groundwork to support electric vehicles, energy efficiency programs and other renewable energy sources. The city predicts that through the NSGI it will see a minimum of $34 million dollars in city savings over the next 15 years.

"We are pleased to be working with NorthStar Utilities Solutions on the smart grid initiative," City of Naperville Community Relations Manager Nadja Lalvani said. "By using MeterSense as the initiative's meter data management solution, we will be able to introduce the benefits of the smart grid to our customers. The city is excited to move forward with modernizing our utility infrastructure to provide our customers with new options for managing their energy consumption."

A core component of the NSGI, MeterSense will help Naperville promote grid efficiency and augment customer service. MeterSense uses automated validation routines to ensure the quality of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data, monitors the performance of the AMI system to identify and correct any performance issues quickly, minimizes manual intervention to drive efficiencies and control costs, stores data securely and reliably for operational analysis and promotes timely and accurate billing.

"Naperville's mandate is to install and commission its smart grid infrastructure in only three years," says Rob DiMurro, NorthStar Utilities Solutions' General Manager. "MeterSense will not only help monitor and validate Naperville's smart meter rollout plan, but it will also help the city realize the benefits of their investment through efficiency gains and understanding customer consumption."
