Sotheby's has just announced that at $460.5 million, its worldwide jewelry sales in 2012 were the highest ever for the company, beating its previous global sales record $404.6 million set in 2010. Among its biggest sales, a rare fancy deep blue 10.48 carat diamond was bought by Laurence Graff for $10.8 million, which is not so surprising, given that the popularity and the price for rare colored diamonds have been rocketing up in recent years. (Graff also spent $46 million on a rare pink 24.78 diamond set on a ring back in 2010, setting the record for the most expensive single jewel sold at auction.)
